Hsiao-Hsien Hou directs this 1990s Taiwanese drama starring Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Michiko Hada and Vicky Wei. Set in 1880s Shanghai, the film centres on the employees and wealthy patrons of four brothels, known as flower houses. Master Wang (Chiu Wai) is devastated when courtesan Crimson (Hada) refuses his offer of marriage, and instead agrees to marry Jasmin (Wei).
Meanwhile, Jade (Hsuan Fang) intends to honour her marriage agreement and Emerald (Michelle Reis) attempts to buy her freedom.
