The series details the arduous odysseys of U. S. Marines, Sledge, Leckie, and John Basilone from their first skirmishes in Guadalcanal, through the rain forests of Cape Gloucester and across the perilous sands of Iwo Jima, to their eventual return to American soil following V-J Day.
