Much has been written about meeting the ethnic and cultural needs of diverse students in schools. From the perspective of multicultural education, the key areas of diversity are considered to be ethnicity, social class, primary language, gender/sex,religion, age, urban-suburban-rural, and exceptionality. The areas of diversity that are most often the focus for schools and meeting the needs of students are ethnicity, social class, and primary language. The American Constitution promises all citizens equality under the law. This book examines where we are as American citizens, in identifying and dealing with issues of diversity, specifically providing protection for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender youth, faculty, staff, and in the public school system. ?Who students are influences how they interact, respond, and learn in classrooms? (McCarthey & Moje, 2002).
