The human condition requires that we observe the first law of nature, self-preservation. Survival of the fittest has always extended beyond physical boundaries into the invisible realms ... from a vile glint of an "evil eye" from a cashier at the supermarket, to the attack waged from the elaborate altar of a practicing occultist with a grudge.
