Language is a system involving the acquisition, development and use of complex systems of communication. The scientific study of language, involving an analysis of form, meaning and the context of language usage, is known as linguistics. Natural languages are signed or spoken. However languages can also be encoded into media such as visual, tactile or auditory stimuli. All languages are dependent on semiotic rules and processes for the association of signs with specific meanings. Languages, whether oral, tactile or manual, consist of a phonological system governing the usage of symbols to form sequences of words or morphemes, which are used to form phrases and utterances. Children acquire languages that they are exposed to without specialized study or direct teaching. This process can be termed as first language acquisition. The acquisition of second and additional languages occurs through education. This book contains some path-breaking studies in the field of linguistics.
