An Devorniewis, ut idem sit, quod Dorobernensis 9 Sciscitor, quia etsijam in vivis esset Edmundus Cantuariensis, pro Archiepiscopo iamen tune temporis ob res suas turbatas minus liabendumfuisse, non defuerunt qui censuerint." But all this about Archbishop Edmund is entirely false; at least this author had no such idea; see him, p. 238, 240, where our Editor, for R. Cantuariensis Episcopus, emends it himself: "E. i. e. Edmnndus Cantuariensis Archiepiscopus" Edmund was as much Archbishop now as ever he was, and his see was by no means void, nor, perhaps, did any one ever imagine it was, Besides, who ever heard of Devormensis for Dorobernensis? But what is remarkable in the case, this author never uses the word Dorobernensis, or any other of that sound; but always Cantuariensis; Dorobernia in him meaning Dover; see p. 76. To be short; the see of Duresme was now vacant by the death of Richard Poore; and Devormensis, i. e. Deuarmensis, is the right reading, formed, though corruptly, from Duresme, or Dur&me, by following, not so much the orthography, as the sound.' LIT. Ecce iterum Crispinus!
