Powell returns to Diagonal to present five new rhythm tracks that reaffirm the label’s preoccupation with jagged No Wave and forward motion, contemporary electronics. Shards of analogue noise splinter around the fractured movements of the broken drum-work, evoking the off-kilter jams of Blurt and 23 Skidoo as much as the linear surge of cold, hard EBM. The effect is bleak, wooden and stripped of all emotional residue, although traces of tribal funk lurk somewhere in the shadows. As before, it’s intense and suffocating stuff — and this edition limited to 500 copies.
