Elijah & Skilliams Butterz label is the single largest driving force for the grime renaissance in 2010. Following two epic releases from Terror Danjah (Hardrive / Hyperdub / Planet Mu) they open their vinyl only white label series with Wolverhampton’s wonder kid TRC. First making his name on the bassline scene a few years ago, the 21 year old is back with his first outing of 2010. The lead tune ‘Oo Aa Ee (VIP)’ is a mid-tempo bouncer that flexes some sparse-sounding hi-hats and canned brass chops to great effect over the dark bassline and moody synth work. It has been floating between the Rinse FM Grime DJs for as long as two years, but is now finally being unleashed on the world on this limited vinyl pressing, and it doesn’t sound a day out of step. ‘Oo Aa Ee has had strong support already across the board from Logan Sama, DJ Q, Oneman, Bok Bok and Ben UFO. On the flipside’s first cut ‘Skipping Rope’, TRC brings in a jazzy saxophone motif to add rich colour to a skippy 808 exercise. On a recent Rinse FM show, grime elder Wiley described this tune as an intelligent riddim, and is rumoured to be vocalling it for his next project. After that, ‘My Empire’ steps into the purple realm that will be quickly likened to styles like Joker and Gemmy, but TRC brings a heavy dose of the Midlands’ bassline edge for a crafty hybrid. It also signifies his intentions for a full grime scene takeover with new music appearing weekly alongside Butterz label mates D. O. K and Royal T, and MCs such as P Money and Trilla. If this is a sign of things to come from TRC, clear a space for him in your listening diary for 2011.
