Sue Barker
The highly sought-after 70s funk/soul/jazz opus (secondhand LP copies fetch over 400 Australian dollars!) from Australia's Sue Barker. Available for the first time on CD, with 3 previously unreleased bonus tracks. Sue's cult classic rendition of Curtis Mayfield's socially-conscious composition "Love To The People" (featured on the noted Respect Overdue and Beach Diggin' compilation series) is an obvious highlight; but equally compelling her a reading of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On". The Rascal's "Groovin'" has refashioned into a mellow Seventies Soul-Reggae groove; while versions of the standard "You Stepped Out Of A Dream" and Billie Holiday's "Lover Man" showcase Sue's Jazz capabilities. This reissue from Playback Records features three previously unreleased bonus tracks; an outtake from the LP sessions, "Zimbabwe" (an socially-conscious original, composed for Sue); "Half Moon" - originally by Sue's idol Janis Joplin - and a funked-up reimagining of the Stones' "You Can't Always Get What You Want". Recordings have been newly remastered from the original tapes, and are packaged with a deluxe 28-page booklet detailing Sue's story, illustrated with rare and unpublished photos and including a note from Sue.
