Launched in 2004, Subtext was one of the Bristol-based Multiverse group’s first labels, which released two seminal singles from the then emerging Vex'd project, with the duo going on to release their now classic album 'Degenerate' on Planet Mu in 2005. Those first releases marked out a vision for Subtext as a platform for uncompromising works that carved out their own unique territory. Six years on, the label house behind some of last decade's most innovative electronic releases (on labels such as Kapsize, Tectonic and Earwax) is revisiting this imprint with a series of albums and EPs from a roster of artists who continue this legacy of exploring the numinous landscape in which modern composition and bleeding edge sonics coalesce. Opening this new phase of activity in the Subtext story is Emptyset, the pioneering project from Mutilverse boss James Ginzburg, aka Ginz, and the DJ and curator Paul Purgas, returning with their second album ‘Demiurge’. Following their recent collaborative release with Underground Resistance vocalist Cornelius Harris, the album continues directly on from where their 2009 Caravan Recordings eponymous debut longplayer left off, pursuing the duo’s exploration of the legacy of sound system culture and the possibilities for experimental bass driven music. Heavily inspired by Bristol’s lineage of dub and system shaking sonics, ‘Demiurge’ continues the project's deconstruction of the club experience and the magnification of the unplanned and unexpected textures that emerge from amplified sound. The resulting album is born from this investigative metamorphic process, the spine of rhythm scraped and exposed to extreme sonic pressure, bass music squeezed to its limits. ‘Demiurge’ takes the form of a tyrannical force, an uncontainable creature of extremes, scouring the earth with shuddering footsteps. A destroyer of worlds. ‘Demiurge’ navigates the extreme interactions between electronic audio equipment. Reducing the production process down to a sin
