With the release of October 16, 1990, Hold Me Up signaled a major creative leap for the Goo Goo Dolls. While still carrying some of the grit of their earlier years, the album embraces a more melodic direction—leaning heavily into alternative rock and power pop. This shift coincides with John Rzeznik taking a more prominent front‑man role, a turning point that would define much of their later mainstream success.
