Eleven-year-old Catherine (Keri Arnold) keeps skipping school and going to the Yorkshire moors to play with her new friend Uma - her parents are too busy looking after their very ill son to take any notice. The two girls have a mysterious experience which convinces Catherine that she has a cure for her brother. But her parents become annoyed at Catherine's persistence, claiming she is just seeking attention and giving them false hope.
Only a change of events convinces both her parents and the local villagers that Catherine is telling the truth.
