The series traces the development of the country from 1,000 BC to 400 AD and shows how a thriving Iron Age Britain became part of the Roman Empire, ushering in an era of prosperity for a few and subjugation (and sometimes outright slavery) for many. The programmes also examine how Celtic communities survived north of Hadrian's Wall and around the fringes of the island, and shows how a new Romano-British culture developed from the turmoil.
