Director Larisa Sheptiko's final film tells the story of the martyrdom of Sotnikov (Boris Plotnikov), a partisan fighting against the Nazis in German-occupied Belorussia. The film is notable for its persistent religious imagery as well as its frank handling of the subject of Soviet collaboration with the Nazis, then unheard of in Soviet cinema.
