Arty's innocence precluded his anticipating the challenges that lay ahead. He was a war baby, born just weeks after the
United States entered World War II. His father, a Sergeant in the U. S. Army, was fighting the Nazis in Europe. All requests
for a furlough to meet his new son were denied. That left Arty's young, inexperienced mother to rear him. Having chafed at her own parents' fun-stealing rules, she gave Arty almost total freedom, except for the necessary restrictions to keep him safe. By the age of six, he and his buddies were roaming his Chicago suburban neighborhood at will. But that all ended when his father returned home from the Army. Soon thereafter, Arty started kindergarten and his sister Kathy was born. How does free-spirited Arty adapt to the changes? Or does he?
