The story begins with the first person voice of a man who owns a copy office for legal documents in downtown Wall Street. A man comes to him applying for a job: Bartleby. He is an effective worker (he copies documents without errors, he is the first to arrive and the last to leave) but, before another class of requests, the only thing he can answer is: he would rather not do so (I would prefer not to).
