A Tale of Two Cities (Annotated)
Charles Dickens
Differentiated book- It has a historical context with research of the time-History of Two Cities, (1859), is a novel by Charles Dickens, set in London and Paris, before and during the French Revolution. With more than 200 million copies sold, it is among the most famous works in the history of fiction literature. The novel describes the plight of the French peasants demoralized by the French aristocracy in the years before the revolution, the corresponding brutality demonstrated by the revolutionaries towards the former aristocrats in the early years of the revolution, and the many unfavorable social parallels with life in London for the same period of time. This follows the lives of several protagonists through these events. The most important characters are Carlos Darnay and Sydney Carton. Carlos Darnay is a former French aristocrat who falls victim to the indiscriminate anger of the revolution, despite his virtuous nature. Sydney Cartón is a wasted English lawyer, who strives to redeem his wasted life with an unrequited love with Carlos Darnay's wife. The 45-episode novel was published in 31 weekly installments in the new Dickens literary magazine titled All the Year Round. From April 1859 to November 1859, Dickens also republished the eight chapters in monthly sections on green roofs. All but three of Dickens' previous novels had appeared only as monthly installments.
