The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes

Dr. Watson tells all the stories in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes in the first person, as in all but four of his stories. In the entry that the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography dedicates to Doyle, it is suggested that the stories contained in this volume point to social injustices, such as the betrayal of an opera singer to a king, the deceit of a servant to his stepfather. with a fictional lover, the use of an aristocratic rogue at the hands of a moneylender, and the abundant assets of a tramp in Kent. He also suggests that, in contrast to these injustices, Holmes is portrayed as one who deals with coolness and justice an unjust world of official incompetence and aristocratic privilege
