When Maud Montgomery was 21 months old, his mother died of tuberculosis. Her father left her in the care of the maternal oxen, Alexander and Lucy Woolner Macneill of Cavendish, moving east to western Canada, where she finally settled in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, and remarried.
