The Prince and the Pauper
Mark Twain
is a novel by American author Mark Twain. It was first published in 1881 in Canada, before its publication in 1882 in the United States. The novel represents Twain's first attempt at historical fiction. Set in 1547, it tells the story of two boys who were born on the same day and are identical in appearance: Tom Canty, a poor man who lives with his abusive and alcoholic father at Offal Court on Pudding Lane in London, and Edward VI. of England, son of Henry VIII of England. Tom, dressed as Edward, tries to cope with the customs and manners of the court. His fellow nobles and the palace staff believe that the prince has a disease that has caused him to lose his memory and they fear that he will go mad. He is repeatedly asked about the lost Great Seal of England, but he knows nothing about it. However, when Tom is asked to participate in the trials, his common sense observations assure them that his mind is healthy.
