The plot of the novel is put together freely with respect to the genuine exercises of the Molly Maguires and, especially, of Pinkerton specialist James McParland. The epic is partitioned into two sections: in the main, Holmes explores an evident homicide and finds that the body has a place with another man; and in the second, the account of the man initially thought to have been the casualty is told.
