A story of Nell Trent, a beautiful and virtuous young woman "not exactly fourteen". As an orphan, she lives with her maternal grandfather in their quirky goods store. His only friend is Kit, an honest boy who works in the store and whom he teaches to write. Secretly obsessed with making sure Nell doesn't die Like her parents, her grandfather tries to provide Nell with a good inheritance through playing cards. He keeps his nightly games a secret, but he borrows a lot from the evil Daniel Quilp, a hunchbacked, evil, grotesquely deformed dwarf money lender. In the end, the small amount of money is at stake and Quilp takes the opportunity to take over the shop and drive out Nell and her grandfather. His grandfather has a nervous breakdown that leaves him without intelligence, and Nell takes him to the Midlands of England to live as a beggar. Meanwhile, Kit, who lost her job in the curiosity business, has found a new job at Art Mr. and Mrs. Garland. Here he is contacted by a mysterious "single gentleman" who is looking for news from Nell and her grandfather. The "single knight" and Kit's mother pursue them unsuccessfully and meet Quilp, who is also lurking from fugitives. Quilp keeps a rancor to Kit and has accused him of thief. At the same time, a coincidence leads Mr. Garland to find out of Nell's whereabouts and that he, Kit and the Lone Knight. Unfortunately, at his arrival Nell is at End of his arduous trip.
