Most of us have yelled "Shotgun!" at some point in our lives. We're all running for the car, wanting desperately to be the one who gets to ride in the front seat with the driver. Why is that? Why do we prefer to be in the front seat of a moving vehicle instead of in the back? The answer is simple really: We want to see where we are going. We want to be involved in the ride, to feel like we are engaged with the driver, not in the back where we can't even see out of the windshield. What happens when we don't yell "Shotgun!" in our Christian walks? What happens when we relinquish any active participation in our own faith, passively sitting in the back where we don't really know where it's going? That's exactly what had happened to the church in Colossae, and now they were under the influence of a lot of false teachers and flimsy excuses for Christianity. Paul wrote this letter to remind them to get back in the front seat where they belonged. Paul knew they needed to get back to basics so that they could once more be a part of their own faith.
