The prophet Isaiah wrote his book approximately 700 years before Jesus Christ was on the earth. Like all Old Testament prophets, they declared God's word for the people who were around at the time but also had one eye for the future. And so it is with Isaiah as he spoke God's word for the Israelites at the time he was also looking forward to the coming Messiah. For the Christian, Jesus Christ was the Suffering Servant, and therefore Isaiah 53 is a prophetic message of his trial, suffering, death, resurrection and ascension.
