Fourteen-year-old wise cracking Theo Johnson isn't the most popular girl in school. In fact, Theo's pretty sure nobody knows she exists, especially Lawrence Conrad, the most popular boy in school and also the most perfect in every way. One Halloween night Theo visits her neighbor, Darlene, the glamorous and brilliant hair stylist and part-time mad scientist. It seems Darlene has a mission that only Theo, with Lawrence Conrad in tow, can accomplish. The thing is, Theo isn't a frumpy pumpkin girl anymore, she's a beautiful princess, courtesy of Darlene and three magic pills. The mission is a dangerous one which takes place in an alternate reality accessed through Darlene's basement and some high-tech chrome hair dryers. Theo finds herself face-to-face with Darlene's evil sister who has some pretty nasty plans for Theo. It's up to Theo to accomplish her mission and get out of there alive, while trying to figure out whether she likes the new beautiful Theo or the plain girl she used to be.
