Sense and Sensibility Jane Austen

Sense and Sensitivity Sense and Sensibility, original title in English, also known as Sense and Feelings, Judgment and Feeling, Judgment and Sensitivity, or Sense and Sensitivity in other languages, is a novel by British writer Jane Austen published in 1811. She was the first of Austen's novels to be published, under the pseudonym "A Lady". She has been adapted for film and television numerous times, most notably Ang Lee's version in 1995. The protagonists are the Dashwood sisters, Elinor, Marianne and little Margaret, who live with their mother, Mrs. Dashwood. After the death of his father the family estate passed to his half-brother, John Dashwood, the only male descendant and son of a first marriage; the family is left with almost nothing and moves to a cottage in the countryside offered to them by a relative. The novel follows the Dashwood sisters in their new home, where they experience both romance and a love disappointment. There they meet three men: Edward Ferrars, Willoughby and Colonel Brandon. Meanwhile, Elinor is attracted to Fanny's brother, Edward Ferrars, who is visiting. Edward is a quiet, unpretentious young man with a pleasant character. He has no desire to fulfill the wishes of his mother and sister who want to see him as a famous politician or an "elegant figure in the world." Although not handsome or charming, Elinor soon admires Edward's intelligence and good sense. However, Edward's fortune depends on his mother's desire. Elinor knows that Mrs. Ferrars wants her son to marry a high-ranking lady, and she is not allowed to conceive of marriage hopes. Elinor and Marianne have opposite temperaments. Traditionally, Elinor, the eldest, aged 19, has been considered to represent the "sense" (reason) of the title and Marianne, who is 17, represents the "sensitivity" (emotion). However, this view is very limited. A detailed examination of the novel allows us to see in each sister different aspects of each of these traits. The contrast between the characters of the sisters is finally resolved when each of them finds love and lasting happiness.
