The Red House Mystery

The Red House Mystery by A. A. Milne

The Red House Mystery is a novel by A. A. Milne about the mysterious death of Robert Ablett inside the house of his brother, Mark Ablett, while a party was in progress. It is a detective novel with a simple story skillfully told.

Milne is best known for his works on Winnie the Pooh, but before he became famous for telling stories about this teddy bear, he also garnered praise for "The Red House Mystery". The novel is set during a house party in Mark Ablett's mansion known as the "red house". Mark had many guests at the party including a widow and her daughter, an actress and a young man named Bill. While the party was underway, Mark's lost brother Robert arrived at the house and was soon found dead. Then suddenly the guests noticed that Mark was missing. Anthony Gillingham, a very interesting man who just went home to visit his friend Bill, acted as a crime "investigator". The two "detectives", Antony and Bill, continued to "investigate" the crime and find out who committed it. It will be up to the readers to classify who among them is Watson and who is Holmes.

Milne did a great job of telling the story in a very light and fun way. Readers will appreciate this book not for the originality or complicated storyline found in other detective novels. They will enjoy reading it because of the interesting characters and humor contained in the story. This is a good read for people who are looking for a detective novel that is a fun and light book to read.
