FREEDOM RUN was written and first produced during Easter, 1990 before the release of Nelson Mandela from prison and the series of events that led to the eventual official dismantling of the then apartheid regime in South Africa. It is a hilarious "projected" look at a post-apartheid South African society through the fears and aspirations of two long-term condemned prisoners in their prison cell with no hope of ever enjoying the freedom they fought for, in or out of jail. They imagine how very wonderful their lives will be when freedom finally comes to South Africa and the wild jubilations to take place in the townships, especially Soweto, on "freedom night" with music and dance and love-making among other forms of joyous celebrations. However, when they are finally freed to go home on the night apartheid was dismantled, they are confused. They are not prepared for the responsibility of their choice. They realize that it wasn't freedom they fought for as much as dignity. Today, the apartheid system is officially history. But as is the central theme in the play, "what of apartheid in the blood?" Then again, what has fear got to do with social suppression? What if racism is merely economic, and not based on hatred? Find out. Freedom Run is more than a play about apartheid South Africa of old. Today, our world has seen the re-emergence of racial tensions as well as discrimination against ethnic and other minority groups that have spawned initiatives such as the Black Lives Matter, All Lives Matter and others across large sections of the globe. Social justice cries out to be heard. Nii Boi-Dsane is a professionally trained playwright and author. With Freedom Run, he invites you to a re-examination of the concepts of freedom, responsibility and social justice, and what it means to be human.
