High Adventure is a classic war aviation text by James Norman Hall. It was on a cool starry night in early September 1916 that I met Drew from Massachusetts and actually began my adventures as a possible member of the Escadrille Americaine during World War I. We had sailed from New York on the same ship, we had submitted our requests for enlistment in the Foreign Legion on the same day, not knowing the other one; and in Paris, while we waited for our papers, we went to dinner every evening in the same large and seedy restaurant in the Seine quarter.
