The Raven
Edgar Allan Poe
The Raven is a narrative poem written by Edgar Allan Poe, which constitutes his most famous poetic composition, since it gave him international recognition. They are remarkable, the stylized language and the supernatural atmosphere that it manages to recreate. The text narrates the mysterious visit of a talking raven to the home of a grieving lover, and the latter's slow descent into madness. The lover, who has often been identified as a student mourning the loss of his beloved Leonora. The black raven, perched on a bust of Pallas Athena, seems to stir up her suffering with the constant repetition of the words "Nevermore". In the poem, Poe alludes to folklore and various classics. Poe claimed to have written the poem in a very logical and methodical way. His intention was to create a poem that could appeal to both the popular classes and people of more refined taste.
