Professor William Bates spends his sabbatical in the middle of Iowa at a lakeside home. He finds a ghostly visitor on the lake as well as in his bedroom. He meets the love of his life across the lake, but things are quite different on the other side. The paths across the lake can take you places you might not return from. Demon houses and Lunatic Asylums provide answers that will leave him in 1945 or in 1972. Babies crying at nighttime come from the lake itself as well as other creepy things.
