A Daughter of the Snows (Annotated)
Jack London
Differentiated book- It has a historical context with research of the time-A Daughter of the Snows by Jack London. The purpose of realizing this historical context is to approach the understanding of a historical epoch from the elements provided by the text. Hence the importance of placing the document in context. It is necessary to unravel what its author or authors have said, how it has been said, when, why and where, always relating it to its historical moment.(1902) is Jack London's first novel. Set in the Yukon, it tells the story of Frona Welse, "a graduate Valkyrie and Stanford physicist" who follows the trail after teasing her wealthy father's community by her direct manner and befriending the city prostitute. It is also torn between love for two suitors: Gregory St Vincent, a local man who turns out to be a coward and treacherous; and Vance Corliss, a Yale-trained mining engineer. The novel is notable for its strong and self-sufficient heroine, one of the many people who would interpret its fiction. Her name echoes that of her mother, Flora Wellman, though her inspiration is also said to include London's friend Anna Strunsky. Modern commentators have criticized the novel for their endorsement of the main character's view that Anglo-Saxons are racially superior. The novel was commissioned by publisher SS McClure, who provided London with a stipend of $ 125 a month to write it.
