They spend much of their conversations telling each other the possible stories, similar to short fairytales. The novel is fast-paced, even with dense metaphors and allegorical children's stories about the meaning of life, thoughts of God, and questions about the reality and purpose of the Universe. The husband and wife's relationship, and Thom and Lily's, grows as the novel progresses. The four characters travel around the Universe and beyond into dream.
