Ed Blake gets a new post with a firm in Reading, but not long after the young lawyer takes up his job, he discovers that his principal has some rather odd approaches to to the law, a view shard by the young accounts clerk, Tim, working in the same office. He shares his concerns with Blake and they agree between them to record all their concerns before confronting their boss. However, when Blake uncovers a number of conveyancing jobs which appear to him to be just mortgage frauds, he sends the files to his boss, who then arranged for a couple of police officers to call on Blake to discuss the dodgy files. However, the officers files appear to have been doctored, and they suggest Blake has made a mistake. Blake however thinks the cops are in the pocket of his boss, so Blake decides he must leave the firm before he be comes tainted by his principals' dishonesty. In the meantime Tim arranges to meet his boss and discuss issues with the accounts which Blake had suggested to the lad looks like money-laundering. On the evening of the meeting, Tim apparently commits suicide by jumping from the third-floor office. Blake believes he has been murdered and decides to find out exactly what the bosses are up to. They are concerned about his meddling and in order to get rid of their new employee, they frame him on a theft charge and get him jailed ... but Blake is no pushover ... with his career in the law over, he fights back.
