Breaking Murphy's Promise
George Coleman Conrad
Grace Maude Swaney was born in 1890 in Fairchance, PA and moved to live her life in Fairmont, West Virginia when she married Walter Coleman Murphy in 1913. She was quite a lady and she was my Grandma. And, she was a lifelong-loyal Democrat. It was most important to her that I would promise to always be a registered Democrat, and I made that promise. This book examines the personal and political development of America during Grandma Murphy's lifetime and the dramatic changes that have developed in American politics since her death in 1974. I promised Grandma that I would always be a Democrat. I am certain that the intent of that promise was that I uphold the values that Grandma believed in and cherished. This book examines whether that intent is best upheld by keeping or Breaking Murphy's Promise.
