I brake for squirrels and so did they. I brake for squirrels when I drive down the road and a squirrel across the road in front of me. I don't have to think about it. The choice seems instinctive, like a natural reaction. When I brake for a squirrel running across the road, I save a life. That choice changes the trajectory of that squirrel's life permanently for the good. As I think about this, I feel good. It is about feeling grateful. I like the feeling of having a positive impact on the life of a living thing. Each of the stories in this series is one that pivots on a choice made by the heroine. This choice typically is not one that a great deal of planning was made. The schemes were the result of spontaneous decisions. Each heroine made a choice that alters the trajectory of her life permanently for the good, like braking for squirrels. Some were simple choices, while others seem more complex. Either way, each choice changed a life in unfathomable ways, permanently, deeply, for the good. Each heroine can look back at that choice made then, and can marvel at the life-long outcome and feel grateful. I brake for squirrels and so did they.
