The Black Tulip

In 1672, the people of Holland overthrew the republic of the brothers Jean and Corneille de Witt to restore the stadtholder and entrust it to William III of Orange-Nassau . Indifferent to these political events, the godson of Corneille de Witt, Cornelius van Baerle, thinks only of making a black tulip, for which the Horticultural Society of Haarlem has promised a reward of one hundred thousand guilders ( see " tulipomania "). His project will be thwarted by the accusation of treason which hangs against him and by the ploys of an envious neighbor, Isaac Boxtel. However, the hope of seeing this quest succeed will be reborn with the meeting of the beautiful Rosa.
