Edgar Rice Burroughs (Chicago; September 1, 1875-Encino, California; March 19, 1950) was an American fantasy genre writer, noted for his series of Barluom stories (set on Mars) by Pellucidar (taking place in the center of the Earth), the Venus cycle with Carson Napier as the main protagonist and, especially, for the creation of the world famous Tarzan. Burroughs was born on September 1, 1875, in Chicago, Illinois (for many years he lived in the Oak Park suburb), the fourth son of businessman and Major Secession War veteran George Tyler Burroughs (1833-1913) and his wife. Maria Evaline (Zieger) Burroughs (1840-1920). Her middle name comes from her paternal grandmother, Mary Rice Burroughs (1802-ca. 1870). Burroughs was educated at several local schools, and during the Chicago flu epidemic in 1891, he spent a year and a half at his brother's ranch on the Balsa River in Idaho. He subsequently attended the Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, and then the Michigan Military Academy. He graduated in 1895, and by failing the entrance exam at the United States Military Academy
