The poem was published between 1812 and 1818. Dedicated to "Ianthe", it describes the travels and reflections of a young man tired of the world, who is disappointed with a life of pleasure and joy and seeks distraction in foreign lands. In a broader sense, it is an expression of felt melancholy and disillusionment for a generation tired of the wars of the post-revolutionary and Napoleonic eras. The title comes from the term childe, a medieval title for a young candidate for chivalry. The poem was widely imitated and contributed to the cult of the wandering hero Byronic who falls into melancholic reverie while contemplating scenes of natural beauty.
