Anthony Trollope (London, April 24, 1815-London, December 6, 1882) was one of the most successful, prolific, and respected English novelists of the Victorian era. Some of Trollope's most cherished works, known collectively as the Barsetshire Chronicles or The Barchester Novels, revolve around Barsetshire's imaginary county, but he also wrote penetrating novels on political, social, and sexual issues and conflicts of his day. Trollope has always been a popular novelist. Trollope's literary reputation declined somewhat during his last years of life, but from the middle of the 20th century he regained the favor of criticism.
