Differentiated book- It has a historical context with research of the time-The Portrait of a Lady is a Henry James novel, first published serially in The Atlantic Monthly and Macmillan's Magazine in 1880-1881 and then as a book in 1881. It is one of James' most popular long novels and is considered by critics. as one of their best. The portrait of a lady is the story of an energetic young American, Isabel Archer, who, "confronting her fate," finds it overwhelming. She inherits a large amount of money and subsequently becomes the victim of Machiavellian intrigues by two American expats. Like many of James' novels, it takes place in Europe, mainly in England and Italy. Generally regarded as the masterpiece of James' first period, this novel reflects James's continued interest in the differences between the New World and the Old, often to the detriment of the former. It also deals in depth with the issues of personal freedom, responsibility and treason. Isabel Archer, from Albany, New York, is invited by her maternal aunt, Lydia Touchett, to visit Lydia's wealthy husband, Daniel, at his farm near London, after the death of Elizabeth's father. There, Elizabeth meets her uncle, her friendly disabled cousin Ralph Touchett, and the Touchetts' robust neighbor, Lord Warburton. Elizabeth later rejects Warburton's sudden marriage proposal.
