Moving from cross country, track and field sports are the athletic focus of this Yardley Hall series installment. But other scholastic sports such as baseball are also in play. Schoolmate Alf Loring forms the secret S. P. M. (Society of Professional Marauders) with his chums, and Gerald gets in trouble for a prank pulled by the group on arch-rival Broadwood Academy. When not describing sports and schoolboy hijinks, the author focuses on study and hobbies. One such hobby, stamp collecting, lands another Marauder on probation for the same prank.
