Just outside of Taos, New Mexico, four miles east as the crow flies, lay a barren stretch of mesquite brush-covered desert known as Arco Mesa, a place of wind-swept buttes, small herds of Indian shepherded sheep, and haunting beauty. The locals say the place is touched by something that cannot be defined or comprehended. Even the old Hopi Indians who live on the buttes make sure the doors are locked tight after sundown. Chances are never taken after dark. Detective Mendoza, from the Taos Police Department, has been assigned the overwhelming task of solving three missing-person cases, disappearances that soon relate to possible dimensional travel, killer beasts of unimaginable ferocity, and a quasi government organization responsible for all of it.
