Ulysses by James Joyce
James Joyce
What is Ulysses about? On one hand it describes a summer day of 1904 in Dublin, while on the other it tells a story about everything. An ordinary day of an ordinary person who walks, talks and eats, but also thinks, feels, recollects and dreams. Joyce plays with language, different literature genres and disrupts a sense of time. As a result, 24 hours of life become a glimpse of the entire human experience.
When Ulysses was first published in 1922, it was widely criticized as an unsuccessful, indecent and immoral work. Today it is commonly regarded as a masterpiece that should be read by everyone.
