The story starts from three friends, George, Harris, Jerome, and Jerome's dog, named Montmorency. The men are spending an evening in Jerome's room, smoking and discussing illnesses from which they fancy they suffer. They conclude that they're all littered with "overwork", and need a holiday. A stay in the country and a sea trip are each considered. The country keep is rejected as a result of Harris claims that it would be dull, the sea-trip when J. describes unhealthy experiences of his brother-in-law and a follower on ocean trips. the rest of the story describes their watercourse journey and also the incidents that occur.
