Sarmiento's position was not an easy one: his closest friend Aberastain, who had preceeded him as San Juan Governor, had been murdered by Juan Saa's cronies, another montonero Chieftain appointed as the San Luis neighbouring province Governor. This book, altogether with "Facundo, or civilization and barbarism", represents the regard of an extraordinarily intelligent person -constrained by his civilized manners- over two of the most prominent "barbarians" of his times.
