Characters of the Spanish Civil War: and Other Stories
Julio A. Gonzalo
There is a need for what might be called another view of the Spanish Civil War emphasizing the valuable role of Franco and that of the many brave representatives of the Nationalist force during that war (from the "Foreword" by John Beaumont)
Some of the best and most objective books on the Spanish Civil War have been written in English ( Crozier, Hills, Carr, Thomas) but many others are quite hostile to Nationalist Spain, which, after all, was figting for freedom againts a Republican Government dominated by the Soviets.
As the last president of the 2nd Spanish Republic (Manuel Azaña) said Franco did not rise
against the Republic but against the rubble which had taken over the Republic
Epic stories as those the Alcazar of Toledo, the heroic defense of the Sanctuary of Santa María de la Cabeza (Jaen), the decorated cities of Pamplona, Valladolid, Oviedo and Seville, (awarded the Laureada of San Fernando, the máximum Spanish Military decoration), the testament of Jose Antonio Primo de Rivera facing the shooting squad in Alicante, among other stories make this book both most informative and entertaining.
