Renée Ballard, who is still working the night shift, returns to the precinct in the early morning and finds a stranger digging through the old files. He turns out to be retired detective Harry Bosch, who is searching for clues in an open case that he is obsessed with. Ballard throws him out, but takes a look at the file and feels deep empathy and rage. Bosch is investigating the murder of Daisy Clayton, a 15-year-old runaway. Ballard joins forces with Bosch to find out what happened to the victim and bring the killer to justice.
