Europe's prosperity, development, and social cohesion rest on a legal order in which the rule of law is firmly embedded. The principles that constitute the rule of law are increasingly contested within and outside Europe. The current European rule of law strategy only restates the importance of these principles and sanctions countries that do not comply. This volume shows that such a rule of law strategy is destined to fail.
