Diagnosis of the breastfeeding situation in Burkina Faso
Marcel Daba Bengaly
Breastfeeding is recognized as the safest natural way to feed infants and young children. There is ample scientific evidence that exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life ensures optimal growth, development and health of the child. In Burkina Faso, many social and cultural practices hinder good breastfeeding practices. As a result, there are low rates of exclusive breastfeeding, early cessation of breastfeeding and/or poorly conducted weaning. This diagnostic study, conducted under the aegis of the NGO IBFAN and Unicef Burkina, analyzes the social norms and perceptions of breastfeeding in Burkina Faso based on a review of the literature and the collection of qualitative data from various social actors. The findings of this study will certainly provide theoretical insights to nutrition students, NGOs and governmental institutions working in the field of maternal and child health and nutrition.
